“Fish Wars,” 1983-present
The fish, or ichthus, is an ancient Christian symbol that had a resurgence of popularity in the 1970s beginning with a modest media campaign from the Evangelical Union at Sydney University, Australia. Soon the symbol became affixed to every manner of accessory, most commonly in the form of a plastic auto decoration. In 1983 Al Seckel and John Edwards detourned the original by creating the Darwin fish design for a leaflet entitled "Darwin's Views on Religion" that was published for a group called Atheists United. The design was eventually made into plastic car ornaments in 1988 and has since spawned a legion of imitators and counter parodies from Christian organizations.
