Eames Demetrios, Discover Kymaerica, 2006
Discover Kymaerica is a fictional travel guide written by Eames Demetrios that takes place in a parallel universe known as Kcymaerxthaere that overlaps our dimension in the “linear world.” The book contains a series of stories that the events and geographic features of this alternate universe that have been demarcated with actual memorial placards. There are now dozens of these Kcymaerxthaere memorial sites that have been established all over the globe. The nearest historical marker to the exhibition resides in Paris, Illinois. On April 22, 2006, a memorial at the old Woolworth building at the center of town was devoted to the story of “Amory Frontage” and was recognized as site of “Embassy Row for the Parisian Diaspora.” His use of a parallel world that is similar yet distinct to ours is sympathetic to the ideas of the Situationists on many levels, not only with the shift away from accepting given meanings with détournement but also with his use of a more free non-purposeful aesthetically inspired movement through the world the Situationists called dérive, or drift. Discover Kymaerica alters our known landscape with stories and events that invite us to rethink our attachments to our known history and reinscribe our world anew.
